Sydney Northern Districts Table Tennis Association

Table Tennis Australia board member Marie Pinkewich enjoyed social doubles on one of the new tables with 3 of the local players.

Saturday afternoon found the regular table tennis session at the Manly Vale Community Centre playing on new tables. The session has been running for around 16 years on the old tables. The local table tennis association, Sydney Northern Districts Table Tennis Association, decided earlier in the year to replace the aging tables, and applied for a grant from the governing body in Australia, Table Tennis Australia to assist in doing so.

The grant came through in July, and the existing 3 tables and nets were replaced by 4 tables and nets. The existing configuration of the tables in the hall, of the tables side by side was not able to be maintained, so in addition barriers have been purchased that partition the hall in two.

On hand to open the use of the new tables were Marie Pinkewich, board member of Table Tennis Australia and Mark Seeto, president of Sydney Northern Districts Table Tennis Association. Proceedings were opened by SND Manly Vale co-ordinator Kevin Wright who welcomed those present and acknowledged the role of both organizations in procuring the new tables. Marie Pinkewich then said a few words of encouragement and opened the use of the new tables by playing the inaugural smash on one of the new tables.

Refreshments were provided by Kevin Wright and consumed and normal play commenced. Thanks also to Owen Ow for organising the purchase of the equipment and Chee Yow and Kevin for submitting the application.

SND Manly Vale is open for casual drop in play from 3:30pm till 5:30pm on Saturday afternoons most of the year for $5.00 per visit.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that Willoughby Table Tennis Club will be returning to our original venue at the Willoughby Park Centre on Friday October 7.  That will make our last night at our current, temporary home (Club WIlloughby) Friday September 30.

For those newer members who may not be familiar with it, the Willoughby Park Centre building is in the corner of Willoughby Park, at the corner of McClelland and Warrane Streets.  It's just a few blocks from Club Willoughby - and below is a link to a map.  The map shows the hall as "Willoughby Judo Club" and "Sydney Kendo Club".,151194494,1140&tbm=lcl&tbs=lf:1,lf

Willoughby Table Tennis Club New Venue

We are playing at a new venue due to Willoughby Council renovating our old one for the next 15 months or so.  Here are the new details:

Club Willoughby, 26 Crabbes Ave, Willoughby.  We are using the old bowling clubhouse, which is directly behind the main building at Club Willoughby.  There is ample parking in the club  and also street parking in the unlikely event that the club car park is full.

Hire of this venue is more expensive than our old one and to cover our costs, we have had to increase our playing fees from $4 to $6 for seniors and from $2 to $3 for junior (non-working) players.  It's our first fee increase in at least 15 years!

I believe these District Championships were one of the most successful staged over the last few years. Compared with last year, the number of entries increased from 54 to 96 this year and the new initiative to attract a higher standard of player in the new premier group was very well received according to the crowd support during the matches played, despite the fact that the number of entries was a bit disappointing in this event. This was mainly due to another top ranking tournament played on the Gold Coast during this weekend. The concept of prize money for this event appeared to be worthwhile in my opinion. Very encouraging were the participation levels in C grade and the Juniors and we thank members of Manly Vale, Epping YMCA, Cherrybrook and Gina's Clinic for joining this tournament. The tournament organisation went smoothly and we finished by 4pm. Thanks are due to the Sndtta committee members who assisted in the running of the day. It was a real team effort.

The fifth annual Willoughby Table Tennis Club Singles Championship was held on Friday night and the winner is Paul Frankenreiter who defeated Shin Nakazawa in a very close and exciting five games 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 15-13. The final game was a thriller with match points alternating between the players. Congratulations to Paul and commiserations to Shin. This is the first time that the Carol Hughes Perpetual Trophy has been won more than once by the same player, as Paul won it in 2005.

Semi-final results were: Paul Frankenreiter defeated Jenkin Tang 11-9, 6-11, 16-14, 11-7 and Shin Nakazawa defeated Syd Birchall 11-7, 11-7, 11-7.

The event was well supported with 20 entries which was the maximum possible.

Last Saturday the SUNS club hosted the table tennis competition for the 2007 NSW Corporate Games. Over 100 players took part representing 30 organisations. Skill levels went from highly experienced to almost complete beginners.

Local SNDTTA player Michael Kemp, representing Optus, won the Men's Singles, and was runner up in the Men's Doubles with partner Morgan Ng, also a local and representing Optus.

Integral Energy had the largest turnout from a single organisation with 16 representatives, and were champions in the Men's Doubles, and also grabbed third place in the doubles (local player Han Phan and partner). A team photo is available here.

Several players expressed interest in joining a club in our district.

You might want to look out for this tournament next year!

At the AGM on February 7 Syd Birchall decided to stand down from the committee after eight years of service, the last two as president. I am sure we all thank him for his considerable contribution to table tennis in the area. Fortunately he will continue to run the Willoughby club and be the Division 1 recorder.

Congratulations to Willoughby Blue who defeated Suns A 3-2, 12-8 at Willoughby Park Centre last night in the Grand Final of the Spring Interclub Competition!

In one of the closest Grand Finals for years, the championship was decided by the doubles with singles rubbers at 2-2. An enthusiastic crowd provided great support for Willoughby from start to finish. Ellman Lee turned in a stellar performance in winning both singles and combining well with the team's junior member, Jenkin Tang, to win the doubles. Everyone else gave their very best and the Suns players fought valiantly to the last point.

For the first time, Willoughby showed they can win a Grand Final without the great Gary Lo!

Following are detailed results in order of play:

Stewart McDonald (S) d. Paul Frankenreiter (W) -5, 8, 6, 9
Ellman Lee (W) d. Michael Kemp (S) 5, 11, 11
Michael Kemp d. Paul Frankenreiter -10, 6, -9, 6, 9
Ellman Lee d. Stewart McDonald 5, -1, 9, 8
Lee/Tang d. McDonald/Kemp -8, 9, 9, 8

Best wishes for the Festive Season!

Stewart McDonald wins Hornsby Shireís Centenary 2006 Northern Districts Table Tennis Championships.

NSW doubles champion Stewart McDonald of Kellyville overcame fierce resistance from his Thornleigh SUNS team mate Morgan Ng to win the 2006 title. Although the 3-0 win looks convincing, the match was close and exciting to watch, with the recent Top 5 winner, Carlingfordís Morgan, putting Stewart under a lot of pressure and showing that the district has an abundance of strong players.

In the A doubles Ellman Lee (Willoughby TTC) and Shin Nakazawa (Ararat Ryde) sprung a surprise by beating NSW champions and favourites Michael Kemp and Stewart McDonald of Thornleigh Suns 3-0 in an entertaining final.

Other Results:

Singles: A-Reserve: Wei Tong ( Nth. Syd. Leagues) beat Rod Falck (Suns) 3-1.
B-grade: Wing Kwai Chan (Hornsby RSL) beat Tommy Mak (Hornsby RSL)

Top 5 Challenge Results

Congratulations to the following Top 5 Challenge winners:

Morgan Ng who yesterday won the Division 1 Top 5 Challenge held at Manly Vale!
Weston Cai who won the Division A/R Challenge,
Edward Caruana who won the Division 2 Challenge, and
Frank Kustra who won the Division 3 Top 5 Challenge, all held at SUNS last Friday

In Division 1 before a small but enthusiastic group of spectators, Michael Kemp, Ellman Lee, Michel Khachiki, Fung Cheung and Morgan played a keenly contested round-robin with the final result in doubt up to the last match. (Unfortunately, Stewart McDonald, Book Aphichawakoonkhajorn and Steffen Burchhardt were overseas and could not compete.)

At the end of the round-robin, Morgan, Michel and Ellman had all won three of their four matches, and a countback showed that Morgan had won 11 games, Ellman 10 and Michel 9. Under the countback rules, Morgan was declared the winner and presented with a perpetual trophy and an individual medal. We look forward to running this event each year.

In Division A/R the players invited were: Michael Sun and Weston Cai from Suns, Guy Roose and Clement Siu from Willoughby and Charlie Wang from Nth Syd. Leagues. It turned into a close battle and it was Weston Cai who won the trophy with 3 wins. The result was only decided in the very last match when Weston beat his team mate Michael Sun 3-1, who finished 2nd.

In Division 2 the players invited were: Edward Caruana of Hornsby RSL, Cliff and Edward Chan of Suns and Vahe Parseghian and Morrie Ohanessian of Ararat. Edward Caruana was the clear winner with 3 wins and a 5 games loss against Morrie Ohanessian. The matches were marred by several disputes about bat changes during play and a forfeit by members of the Ararat representatives. Edward Chan finished 2nd.

In Division 3 the players invited were: Guy Chan of Hornsby RSL, Frank Kustra, George Biro and Steve Marton, all of Harbord Diggers and Boris Tong of Suns. The title was won by Frank Kustra, who won all his matches and another seasoned campaigner Guy Chan came 2nd.

2006 Willoughby Club Closed Singles

Congratulations to Jenkin Tang who last night won the 2006 Willoughby Closed Singles, defeating Fung Cheung 5, -14, 4, -6, 6 in the final and Ellman Lee in the semi-final 8, 7, -7, -8, 7. Fung defeated Tony Bergman 9, 11, 6 in the other semi. Although Jenkin was stretched to 5 games by Ellman and Fung, he played confidently, with some superb hitting and speed around the table. In the four years that players have competed for the Carol Hughes Perpetual Trophy, we have had four different winners. It was good to see a high school youngster win this year!

Top 5 Challenge -- 2:00pm Sunday 30 July

On Sunday afternoon 30 July, the Sydney Northern Districts A Grade Top 5 Challenge will take place at the council community hall, cnr Condamine and Lovett Streets, Manly Vale. Congratulations to Suns A on winning the Autumn Interclub Final last night, defeating Macquarie Uni 3-2, 11-9! Unfortunately, Steffen Burchhardt was unable to play but MQU nevertheless put up a real battle with rubbers 2 all and the doubles being the decider. Book Aphikawakoonkhajorn played extremely well to win both his singles matches. Nevertheless, full marks to Suns who were the best team over the whole season and deserved their victory.

Following are detailed results:

Michael Kemp d. Rob Chambers 9, 10, -10, 3
Book Aphi. d. Stewart McDonald 10, -8, -4, 2, 2

AR Division Final Played at Willoughby 30/6/06

Congratulations to Suns C who defeated Willoughby Red 5-4, 22-16 in a cliff-hanger of a match which was decided 11-9 in the fifth game of the ninth and deciding rubber. We departed Willoughby Park Centre at 10 minutes past midnight! Both teams were evenly matched but Suns were definitely the younger team and had improved substantially over the season. Suns won 3 singles and 2 doubles, while Willoughby won 3 singles and one doubles. There were a lot of interested spectators (mostly from Willoughby) who applauded loudly and often during the hard fought and intense matches. Special congratulations to Weston Cai (Suns) and Guy Roose (Willoughby) who won both their singles matches.

Team members were as follows:

Suns C: Weston Cai, Michael Sun, Aaron Yap, Kenneth Cheung

Congratulations to Michael Kemp and Stewart McDonald on winning the 2006 NSW Veterans Closed O/40 Doubles title. In an exciting final Michael and Stewart came back from 0-2 behind to win 3-2 against the number one seeds!

14 Mar 2006

The first score sheets have started to arrive. Please try and send them early as this keeps the points tables current for everyone.

Also, please use the full player name at least the first time on the score sheet. I know that several players have unique first names, but just writing Tony makes the recorder waste time trying to figure out which Tony.

Thanks, Rod.

13 Dec 2005

North Sydney Leagues C d. SUNS D 5-4, 18-15, 336-326

In another exciting match table topping North Sydney Leagues C had to wait until the final doubles to grab the title from SUNS D. Four rubbers went to 5 games, including one doubles where North Sydney lost the points 39-44 but won the games 3-2.

Harbord Diggers C d. SUNS E 6-2, 19-14

Harbord Diggers C got away to a 3-0 start and SUNS couldn't claw back the lead.

That's it for all the SNDTTA competitions for 2005. Hopefully we will all be back to defend our titles/knock off the champions in 2006.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

10 Dec 2005

Last night Suns B defeated Willoughby Blue in the Division 1 Grand Final 4-1, 14-8, 210-187 to win the Spring Interclub Competition. Details as follows:

(Order of play)

Ng (S) d. Lee (W) -4, 5, 8, 7

Evans (S) d. Frankenreiter (W) 3, 7, 2

Lee d. Evans -8, 5, -6, 6, 5

Ng d. Frankenreiter 6, -9, 9, -10, 10

Ng/Evans d. Lee/Frankenreiter 13, -9, -3, 6, 8

Morgan and Jonathan played solidly throughout the match and deserved to win. Willoughby resisted strongly but it was very hard to come back from two rubbers down. Morgan and Paul played a thrilling 5 set marathon (101 points) which clinched the match for Suns.

It was pleasing to see supporters present from Suns and, on several occasions, play on other tables stopped as everyone became absorbed in the battle.

We look forward to the 2006 Autumn Interclub which will start around the beginning of March. Best wishes for the festive season to all.

5 Dec 2005

Willoughby Blue d. Ararat 3-2, 9-8, 153-152

Nakazawa (A) d. Frankenreiter (W) 3, 3, 7

Lee (W) d. Khachiki (A) -9, 6, 8, 6

Khachiki d. Frankenreiter 9, 9, 4

Lee d. Nakazawa 7, 8, 6

Frankenreiter/Lee d. Nakazawa/Khachiki 4, -9, 9, 10

Suns B d. Suns A 3-2, 11-6, 186-150

Evans (B) d. Falck (A) 5, 4, 9

Kemp (A) d. Ng (B) 10, 11, 18

Kemp d. Evans -7, 9, 10, -7, 7

Ng d. Falck 5, 6, 7

Ng/Evans d. Kemp/Falck 8, 6, 7

Both matches were close with the winner being decided by the doubles. It is very pleasing to see such close results in semi-finals. This has not occurred over the last few years. The closest match was Willoughby/Ararat where the doubles looked as though it could go either way, while the closest rubber was Kemp/Evans where each player scored 48 points over 5 hard fought games. Congratulations to the winning teams and well done to the runners-up!

So the Grand Final will be between Willoughby Blue and Suns B at Willoughby this Friday night (9/12/05). If you would like to see what will be a terrific match, and possibly play some table tennis as well, come along on Friday!

Syd Birchall

The final round of divison A/R did not change the final placings, so the grand final will be between North Sydney Leagues C (1) and SUNS D (2) at North Sydney Leagues, Friday 9 December.

Individually, congratulations go to Tony Han with a 100% record from 22 matches!

The division 2 results were:

SUNS E d. SUNS G 5-2

Harbord Diggers C d. SUNS F 6-2

So the Grand Final will be between SUNS E (1) and Harbord Diggers C (2) at Thornleigh, Friday 9 December

28 Nov 2005

In division 1, the top four places were finally decided after Week 14, so the semi-final matches will be:

Willoughby Blue (1) v. Ararat (4) at Willoughby, Friday 2 December

Suns B (2) v. Suns A (3) at Thornleigh, Friday 2 December

Winners of these matches will meet in the Grand Final on Friday 9 December.

The battle for third and fourth places was tight with both teams finishing on 32 points but with Suns A having 120 "games for" compared with Ararat's 118.

Best of luck to the semi-finalists! To the three teams who missed out on the semis, thanks for competing and always being competitive.

Turning to Individual Performances, I know Derek Kerr (Suns A) will understand if we put his results to one side. Derek is a fine player but he only played 4 rubbers and won all of those. So congratulations to Ellman Lee (Willoughby) for finishing at top of the table with 94.1% rubbers won, losing only one! Well done to Fung Cheung (Willoughby) and Jonathan Evans (Suns B) who took the next two places. A special mention is due to those people who played a maximum 24 rubbers in the competition -- Morgan Ng, Tommy Tong, Wei Tong and Rod Falck.

Syd Birchall

In division 2, the semi-final matches will be:

SUNS E (1) vs SUNS G (4) at Thornleigh, Friday 2 December

Harbord Diggers C (2) vs Suns F (3)

Individually, Theo Morsink finished with a 100% record.

Division A/R still has one round robin match to go. Currently North Sydney Leagues C are in first place and SUNS D are running second, and neither of them can be caught. There is a possibility that they could swap positions after the last round.

22 Jul 2005

The results from SUNS D vs North Sydney Leagues C have been received.

18 Jul 2005

Congratulations to Suns A on a very convincing 5-0 (15 games to 4) win over Willoughby Blue in the Autumn Interclub Teams Competition Grand Final! Michael Kemp and Stewart McDonald were just too strong for Ellman Lee and Fung Cheung. (Unfortunately for Willoughby Blue, Gary Lo has an injured back and was unable to play.)

Details are as follows:

Suns A def. Willoughby Blue 5-0

Kemp d. Cheung 8, 9, 5

McDonald d. Lee 6, 8, 7

Kemp d. Lee -9, 11, 6, 9

McDonald d. Cheung 7, -7, 3, 8

Kemp/McDonald d. Cheung/Lee -5, 1, 7, -9, 9

The Spring Competition will start around the end of August, so please think about your club entries.

I look forward to seeing most of you at the district championships next Sunday, 24 July.

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

12 Jul 2005

Could someone from SUNS D or North Sydney Leagues C please contact the recorder (Rod Falck, phone 98076998) with the result from their final match from week 15. The results have not been received and neither captain can be contacted, and the placing for the 2nd semi-final depends on the result.

4 Jul 2005

Congratulations to Suns A and Willoughby Blue, winners of the semi-finals played last Friday night. These teams will meet in the Grand Final at Thornleigh this Friday, 8 July.

Detailed semi-final results are as follows:

Suns A d. Harbord 5-0 (15-2)

Kemp d. Whiteford 5, 5, 6; Kemp d. Finlay 5, 8, -5, 3

McDonald d. Finlay -8, 9, 5, 9; McDonald d. Whiteford 3, 2, 6

Kemp/McDonald d. Wright/Whiteford 1, 9, 9

Willoughby Blue d. Ararat 3-0 (9-3) (dead rubbers not played)

Lee d. Khachiki 9, 9, 3; Lee d. Nakazawa 8, -10, 4, -10, 2

Cheung d. Nakazawa -5, 3, 10, 12

Good luck to both winning teams for the Grand Final!

28 Jun 2005

Attached are results for the final week of the Autumn Interclub Competition; i.e. Week 14, commencing 20 June. Congratulations to Harbord on winning fourth place and a chance in the semi-finals. Overall, it was a close competition with six of the eight teams having a good prospect of making the semis.

The semi-finals will be as follows:

Suns A v. Harbord at Thornleigh on Friday, 1 July

Willoughby Blue v. Ararat at Willoughby on Friday, 1 July

The Grand Final will be played between winners of the semis during the following week, details to be advised.

Putting aside Peter Monostoriís brief appearance, congratulations to Stewart McDonald, Michael Kemp and Morgan Ng, all from Suns, who filled the top three places on the Individual Performance table. Well done also, to Wilson Chu and Marcus Green from Suns G who played hard and consistently throughout the comp with only limited success.

Best of luck to semi-final players!

16 Jun 2005

Attached are progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 13 (week commencing 13/6). Many thanks to team captains for getting results in so quickly at a vital stage of the comp. The first three places have been decided although this week's results will determine whether Willoughby Blue or Ararat finish in second place. There is an exciting fight for fourth place with only one point separating three teams. After looking at the draw for the final week, one would have to say it probably favours Harbord but anything could happen.

Best of luck!

Entry Forms for the 24 July championships will be out soon!

16 Jun 2005

Attached are progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 12 (week commencing 6/6). It now seems clear that Suns A, Willoughby Blue & Ararat will fill the top three places at the end of Round 2 with the fourth place being fought out between Harbord, North Sydney & Suns B. The fourth placed team will play Suns A in one semi-final and Willoughby Blue will play Ararat in the other semi.

Entry forms for the SNDTTA championships on Sunday, 24 July, will be distributed shortly.

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

7 Jun 2005

Attached are progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 11 (week commencing 30/5). Ararat and Willoughby Blue have changed places on the points table while Harbord has narrowly edged North Sydney out of the top four. There are three weeks to go in Round 2 and North Sydney probably has tougher matches than Harbord.

Keep in mind also that semis and the grand final will be played at the venue decided by the team placed higher on the points table.

All in all, it looks like an exciting month ahead!

A reminder to keep Sunday, 24 July free for the District Championships.

Attached are the progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including Week 10 (week commencing 23/5). Score Sheet for Suns A v. Ararat has not yet been received.

Suns A and Ararat are still in the lead despite having only 9 weeks' results recorded. Gary Lo made a welcome return to our competition last Friday and he actually lost a close match, 3-2 to Paul Frankenreiter. This is a very rare event but it injects some additional interest into the competition. Well done Paul!

Remember, Sunday 24 July is the day for our annual district championships -- please keep it free.

Attached are the usual progress results for Division 1 Autumn Interclub Comp up to and including Week 7 (week commencing 2/5) which is the last week of Round 1. Suns A and Ararat are in first and second places with daylight third. An exciting feature of Round 2 will be a hard fought contest between at least four teams for third and fourth places. Semi-finals will be between 1 & 4 and 2 & 3.

Apart from Peter Monostori who has played only one match, individual leaders are Michael Kemp and Stewart McDonald from Suns A. I understand that Gary Lo has returned from Hong Kong and he will strengthen Willoughby Blue.

Most of you will be aware that the 48th World Championships have just ended in Shanghai. Results for a few events are listed below:

To All Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results for the Autumn Interclub Competition up to and including week commencing 28 March (week 3). There is one deferred match between Harbord and Suns B. Suns A and Ararat have jumped out to a convincing lead.

Although only three weeks' matches have been played, I have commenced recording individual performances on the "Individuals" tab of the file, but it will take a few more weeks for really meaningful results to appear.

There are some players for whom I do not have e-mail addresses, so could captains check to see if all their players are included and, if not, please let me have the e-mail addresses.

26 Mar 2005

Welcome to all Division 1 players in the SNDTTA Autumn Interclub Teams Competition!

Attached are progress results for teams up to and including week 2. I have not yet compiled individual results as it is too early for these to have much meaning at all. I have introduced reporting of each team match result as this adds interest to the points table.

Regrettably, we have temporarily lost the Hornsby RSL team due to Derek Kerr's commitments but Wilson Chu is playing in a third Suns team (G) and it is good to keep him within the competition.

Would team captains please let me know e-mail addresses of new players so that I can add them to the distribution list. Any comments or suggestions are always welcome.

Best wishes for a successful competition!

Syd Birchall 26/3/05

20 Mar 2005

The 2005 Autumn competition has begun.

A couple have changes have been made for this season. Division 3 is no longer with us and Division 2 has been divided into two groups, A and B, and matches will be played with 3-player teams with 6 singles and 3 doubles. See the draws for full details.

Division One Grand Final played

The Grand Final of the Division 1 Spring Interclub Competition was played last night at Willoughby with Willoughby Blue defeating Suns A 4-1. Congratulations to Gary Lo, Ellman Lee, Fung Chung & Guy Roose (c) and commiserations to Stewart McDonald (c), Michael Kemp & Owen Tsao! Details are as follows, in the order in which rubbers were played:

McDonald def. Lee 7, 7, 8

Lo def. Kemp -16, 6, 3, 9

Lee def. Kemp -6, 7, -9, 11, 3

Lo def. McDonald 9, 9, 7

L/L def. McD/K 9, 6, 9

Although the result was convincing, it didn't look that way early on with Willoughby losing the opening rubber, Gary Lo losing the first (marathon) game of his rubber, and Michael Kemp having two match points against Ellman Lee. The grand final was always exciting and was well supported by an enthusiastic crowd.

Best wishes for the Xmas/New Year holiday season!

Syd Birchall 18/12/04

Our last night for the year will be this Friday, 17 December. First night back in 2005 will be Friday, 28 January. Some of us will look forward to a break and a chance to recharge the batteries!

The Sydney Northern Districts Spring Competition, Division 1 Grand Final, will be played at Willoughby this Friday night between our Blue team and Suns A. It promises to be an exciting final and I know you will want to support our team.

Seasons Greetings to all!

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

Kemp def. Chambers 8, 5, -8, 5

Kemp def. Nakazawa 7, 9, 11

The Grand Final between Suns A and Willoughby Blue will be played at Willoughby next Friday night (17/12).  It promises to be an exciting and worthy final!

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

To All Division 1 Players:

The results pages contain the final team points table and final individual performances for the Spring Interclub Competition. Semi-final details are on the teams attachment but the first semi was played on Monday night with a 5-0 win to Suns A who will meet the winner of the other semi in the Grand Final on Friday, 17/12. Congratulations to Gary Lo for once again finishing top of the individual performances and well done to everyone who played, especially those who played 22 and 24 matches. I'll let you know full results of the semis and Grand Final.

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

To All Division 1 Players:

Final week matches have been completed and, as soon as I receive all the score sheets, the usual points table and individual performances will be updated and issued.  However, I have been informed of the results and a summarised points table is as follows:

Willoughby Blue

Ararat A

Suns A

Suns B

Harbord A

Willoughby Red

Hornsby A

North Sydney A

Therefore, Willoughby Blue will play Suns B in one semi-final this Friday night at Willoughby and Ararat will play Suns A in the other semi-final tonight (Monday) at Ararat. The winners will meet in the Grand Final next week at a venue yet to be decided, depending on the semi-final results.

Good luck to all!

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

To All SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

Attached are the progress results for the Spring Interclub Competition and Individual Performances up to and including week commencing 22 November (Week 13). The only result not yet included is Suns B v. Ararat but we know that Ararat won 3-2. With only this week to go in Round 2, Willoughby Blue will finish in first place and Ararat and Suns A will take two of the remaining three places in the semi-finals. Suns B must be favoured to take the final place but, without going into the possible outcomes of this week's matches, it is theoretically possible for either Harbord or Willoughby Red to push them out.

An exciting finish lies ahead and good luck to all!

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

TO SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

Progress results for the Spring Interclub Competition can be found on the results pages up to and including week commencing 15/11 (Week 12). For the first time in quite a while, I am able to report that all teams have played and recorded the same number of matches, i.e. 12. It now appears likely that the semi-finalists will be Willoughby Blue, Ararat, Suns A & Suns B, although it is not impossible for Willoughby Red or Harbord to finish in the top four. Including this week, there are two weeks to go before the semis. Best of luck for the sprint to the line!

Syd Birchall 9498-8646

TO SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

Attached are progress results for the Spring Interclub Competition up to and including week commencing 8/11 (week 11). It's very crowded at the top of the table and the final three weeks promise to be exciting. Remember, every point counts, so don't neglect the doubles even if you're down 4-0 or 3-1.

Best of luck!

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

TO SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

The results pages include results for Division 1 teams and individuals up to and including week commencing 1/11 (week 10). I understand that the week 3 deferred match between Ararat and Suns A has now been played and that Suns won 5-0; however, this result has not  been included in the results because I have not yet received a score sheet. After this week, there are three more weeks of play before the semi-finals and, as was the case in the Autumn competition, it looks as though there will be a real battle for at least the third and fourth places. Best of luck to all!

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

TO SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

The results pages include results up to and including week commencing 25/10 (week 9). Deferred matches and missing score sheets are potentially distorting team rankings but Willoughby Blue has established a clear lead.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results to and including week commencing 18/10 (week 8), with two deferred matches to be played.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

Attached are progress results to and including week commencing 11/10 (week 7). A few points:

1. I need the score sheet for Harbord v. Suns B from week 7.

2. Could Ararat organise their deferred match from week 3 against Suns A and let me know the date. Suggest either Monday 25/10 or Monday 1/11.

3. Could team captains be vigilant in reading the draw and making sure they have a team to attend on the designated night and at the designated venue. We have had a case where one team failed to turn up or notify the opposition and the unfortunate result was a 5-0 forfeit. We always try to avoid forfeits by deferring matches wherever advance notice is provided, but "no-shows" are obviously not acceptable.

The competition continues to be close but we can't get an accurate reading until the deferred match has been played and all score sheets are in.

Best of luck in Round 2!

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

To SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

Attached are progress results up to and including w/c 4/10 (week 6). With exception of the deferred match between Ararat and Suns A, all results have now been included. The top five teams are quite close although results of the deferred match could change the rankings. The individual performances are still rather difficult to interpret. A change from previous competitions is that many more players have participated. As well as having an additional team this season, 28 players have competed so far even though only 16 play each week. This has had the effect of the average number of matches per player going down, so, although only one week remains to complete Round 1, many players have not yet played against all other teams. There are seven players with a 50% rubbers won record!

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

To SNDTTA Division 1 Players:

The results page contains progress results up to and including week 5 (week commencing 27/9); however, I have not received a score sheet for the Harbord v. Willoughby Blue match last Friday. Could whoever has this sheet please e-mail or mail it to me urgently.

There was one relatively major upset last week when Suns B defeated Suns A 5-0! The balancing-up of the two Suns teams has definitely enhanced the competition.

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

To Sydney Northern Districts Division 1 Players

The results page contains progress results up to and including week commencing 20/9 plus one match from week commencing 27/9 (week 5). It's sometimes difficult to get the results in balance because two teams have home matches on Mondays while the other six are on Fridays. Rather than wait another week to get this Friday's results, I decided to include the match from week 5 played on Monday night (Hornsby v. Ararat). It's still too early to read a lot into the individual performances.

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

To Sydney Northern Districts Division 1 Players

See the Recent Results for the first three weeks of the Spring Interclub Competition. Except for Suns A at the top and North Sydney at the bottom, the points table is very close. North Sydney should not be disheartened as it is early days and some of their individual matches have been lost in 5 games. In fact, although they have so far won only one rubber, they have won 17 games in three matches.

The Individual Performances are not too meaningful at this early stage. Some players have played only two rubbers and some have not yet played at all.

Please let me know if you have any questions. If some of your team mates are not receiving the email updates, please provide their e-mail addresses and I'll add them to the contact list.

Best of luck!

Willoughby Blue Wins Grand Final in Division 1 !

Congratulations to Willoughby Blue (Gary Lo, Ellman Lee, Fung Cheung & Guy Roose [captain]) who defeated Suns A (Michael Kemp, Stewart McDonald, Owen Tsao & Don Carswell [captain]) 3-1 in Friday night's Grand Final. Commiserations to Suns A who are a fine team but just couldn't make it at the end. Well done and thanks to the other Division 1 teams who did their best at all times and helped to make the Autumn Teams Competition a success. Following are detailed results, including Semi-finals:

Suns A def. Willoughby Red  3-0

Kemp def. Frankenreiter 8, 7, 8   Carswell def. Tong -7, 8, 5, 10

Kemp def. Tong 7, 7, 7

Willoughby Blue def. Ararat  3-0

Lee def. Chambers -8, 9, 7, 4   Lo def. Nakazawa 6, 7, 6

Lee/Lo def. Nakazawa/Khachiki 8, 5, 7

Grand Final

A reminder to get your entries in for the District Championships on Sunday 1 August. Entries close 19 July.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players & Willoughby Club Members:

Semi-final results in the Division 1 Autumn Teams Competition were: Suns A def. Willoughby Red 3-0 and Willoughby Blue def. Ararat 3-0. Thus, the two winning teams will meet in the Grand Final next Friday night (2 July) at Thornleigh. It will undoubtedly be an exciting match and I wish both Suns A and Willoughby Blue the best of luck! Full details of Semi-final and Grand Final results will be published during the week commencing 5 July.

There will be no further competition matches until the end of August when the Spring Teams Competition begins. However, the District Championships (individual events) will be held on Sunday, 1 August at Thornleigh and I urge those who played in the Autumn Comp to submit their entries as soon as possible. The Willoughby Club Closed Singles will be held on a Friday night during August and I will advise the date during July.

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

To All Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are results for the Autumn Teams Competition up to the end of the rounds and with Semi-finals and Grand Final to go. Also attached are final results for Autumn Individual Performances. Congratulations to the four semi-final teams with Suns A to play Willoughby Red and Willoughby Blue to play Ararat, both matches on this Friday night. Willoughby Red and Hornsby achieved the same number of points for fourth place but the Red team had a superior number of games won. We look forward to exciting semi-final matches with the winners meeting next week in the Grand Final.

Congratulations to Gary Lo (Willoughby) and Michael Kemp (Suns) for outstanding individual performances, with Gary having a 100.0% win record and Michael 94.4%. Although Gary played only 6 matches (because of absence in Hong Kong), I think we would all agree that he deserves his number 1 position. Michael had a splendid record, losing only one match (to Gary) out of 18 played. A word of commendation for Wilson Chu (Hornsby) who played more matches than anyone else (24) and always in a friendly and sportsmanlike manner.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To all Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results to and including week commencing 7/6 (week 13), except for the Suns B v. Hornsby match last Friday night for which I do not yet have a score sheet, and the Willoughby Blue v. Suns A match which has been deferred to this week. The battle for fourth place is now being fought between Hornsby and Willoughby Red and it will probably be decided on this week's results. The Red team has finished very strongly but, regretfully, Harbord and Suns B cannot qualify. This week will complete the two rounds of the competition and the Semi-finals will be played next week (Team 1 v Team 4 & Team 2 v Team 3) with the Grand Final on the following week (w/c 28/6). Best of luck for an exciting finish!

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results in the Autumn Competition, up to and including week commencing 31/5 (week 12), but without two results: Hornsby v. Willoughby Red (a deferred match) & Harbord v. Willoughby Blue. Whoever has these score sheets, please get them to me without delay as next week is the last week of the rounds. Without these results, it's difficult to know which team will take fourth place but Suns A, Willoughby Blue and Ararat seem certain to take the first three places.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results for Autumn Competition team and individual performances up to and including week commencing 24/5 (week 11). The first three team places are fairly clear but there is a battle for fourth place between Harbord and Hornsby.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To MWDTTA Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual team & individual progress results up to and including week commencing 17/5 (week 10). There is one deferred match, with three weeks to go after this week to the end of the rounds. A couple of items of interest: Suns A lost their first match of the season, 3-2 to Ararat; and Gary Lo, who has been registered with Willoughby Blue since the start of the competition, will return shortly after being delayed in Hong Kong.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To All Division 1 Players

Attached are the usual progress results up to and including week commencing 3/5 (week 8). The one deferred match will be played this Friday night. Suns A continue to widen their lead with another 5-0 result.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results for teams and individuals up to and including week commencing 26/4 (week 7). With exception of a deferred match between the two Willoughby teams, this concludes the first full round of matches. Suns A and Ararat are clear leaders at this point and the result of the deferred match cannot alter those positions. It was good to see the successful return of Shin Nakazawa after his shoulder surgery.

Best of luck for Round 2. Keep in mind that the top four teams qualify for the semi-finals.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To All Division 1 Players:

Attached are progress results for teams and individuals up to and including last week (week 6). Suns A has performed excellently in opening up a very big lead, having lost only 2 rubbers out of 25 played. Tonight they play Hornsby RSL in which team Derek Kerr has played every singles match and won all of them. It should be an exciting contest. This week's matches will be the last in Round 1 although there is one deferred match carrying over into Round 2.

It will be very hard to catch Suns A but there will be a tough fight for the other three semi-final places.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To MWDTTA Division 1 Players:

Attached are progress results for teams and individuals up to and including last week (week 5). Suns A has established a commanding lead but positions after that are keenly contested. There is one deferred match. Some of you may have wondered why Dennis Rylatt (Willoughby Red) and Shin Nakazawa (Ararat) have not yet played. Dennis has been ill and, in the not too distant future, he will be moving to Melbourne for work reasons. Dennis has been a great supporter of the MWDTTA and we will miss him. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and good table tennis opportunities down south! Shin is slowly recovering from shoulder surgery and should be back soon.

Syd  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Welcome to the Autumn Teams competition for 2004!  Attached are progress results for teams and individuals to and including week 3 (w/c 22/3/04).  It is of course very early days so you should not read too much into the results. Nevertheless, it's good to see Ararat at top of the table, followed by Harbord. It's also pleasing to see some new names in the competition including Paul Frankenreiter from Germany, Ian Finlay who hasn't played in this comp for some years, and most of the Suns B team.

So far, we have had only one deferred match (in week 4) and we really must keep these to a minimum as they often create as many problems as they solve.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

For your information, I attach the draw for this competition. It starts in the week commencing 8 March and our first matches will be on Friday, 12 March (Blue at home to Harbord, Red away to Suns B).  Both teams' matches during week 3 are "away" because Willoughby Park Centre is closed on Friday 26 March due to Council Elections being held on the following day.  No matches are scheduled during the week commencing 5 April because Good Friday falls in that week and WPC will also be closed on that day.

There will now be a four-team semi-final followed by a grand final.

Best of luck to all (watch those injuries, guys!) -- let me know if you have any questions.

Since e-mailing you with suggestions for three Autumn Competition teams, I have learned that Rob Chambers is needed at Ararat and Marcus Green is returning to SUNS. As well, Shin needs time to recover fully from his shoulder operation in December. It therefore seems sensible to basically stay with the Blue and Red teams from last year, as follows:

BLUE  Gary Lo, Ellman Lee, Fung Cheung, Guy Roose (c)

RED  Dennis Rylatt, Tommy Tong, Shin Nakazawa, Tony Bergman (c)

As Ararat will still have only two players (Michel & Rob), it may be that Shin will move to Ararat but a decision on this can be delayed until the last week of this month. Unless anyone has strong disagreement, Iíll register the teams as above with Barry Davies (MWDTTA Secretary) on Thursday this week. I will pay all fees with my own money and I would appreciate prompt reimbursement by cash or cheque. Fees are $62.00 for the year, consisting of TTNSW registration $37, MWDTTA $15 and WTTC $10. If anyone has already paid TTNSW separately, please let me know before Thursday  (I know Tony has already paid).

The draw will be made during the last two weeks of this month with matches commencing in the first week of March.

Best Regards,

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

The Spring Teams Competition ended on Friday night with the Grand Final won by Willoughby Blue 3 ?0 against Suns A.  Congratulations to Guy Roose (c), Gary Lo, Fung Cheung & Ellman Lee and commiserations to Don Carswell (c), Michael Kemp & Stewart McDonald.  The result was closer than the numbers indicate because Don almost led Gary 2 ?0 and then an enthusiastic crowd saw a thrilling match between Fung & Michael which Fung won 19-17 in the fifth game! Fung staged a great fight back as he was down 2 ?0 and then 10-8 in the fifth. Match points were exchanged right to the end.

In the Final played the previous week, Suns A defeated Willoughby Red 3 ?0 with Don playing exceptionally well to win both singles matches in 5 games.

Details of these matches plus the final points table and the individual performances are on the usual results page.  Congratulations to Gary Lo who topped the table with a 100% win performance!  Special commendation to Derek Kerr, Wilson Chu & Michel Khachiki who played in every match.  Thanks to everyone for doing their best at all times.

Have a great Xmas and a Happy New Year!

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

Congratulations to SUNS A for defeating Willoughby Red and making the grand final, which will be played next Friday night, 12/12 at Willoughby against Willoughby Blue. It promises to be an exciting match.

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results for Spring Teams competition and individual performance up to and including week commencing 24/11 (week 14). All deferred matches have now been caught up but two score sheets are required before the results for the Spring comp can be finalised. Unfortunately, Suns A had to forfeit a deferred match against Harbord as, due to work commitments, they could not field a team and there was no time for any more deferrals. (While the forfeit affects team results, it is not included in individual performances.)

Although two score sheets are still outstanding, they will not affect the first three rankings on the teams points table which has Willoughby Blue placed first, Suns A second and Willoughby Red third. Congratulations to these teams who will now play the Final and Grand Final. Suns A will play Willoughby Red at Thornleigh on Friday 5/12 and the winner will meet Willoughby Blue at Willoughby on Friday 12/12.

I will of course publish final results as they become available.

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual progress results for teams and individuals up to and including last week (w/c 17/11, week 13). We are now in the final week of the rounds and have caught up all but two deferred matches which will be played tonight. Suns A and Willoughby Blue played two matches against each other last Friday and these resulted in convincing wins for the Blue team, 5-0 & 4-1. However, there were three 5-game rubbers and one 4-gamer so it was somewhat closer than the match results suggest. Willoughby Blue are in a commanding position to finish the rounds in first place as they only have to win 3 of 10 rubbers in their last two matches to achieve this, even if Suns were to win 10 out of 10 in their's.

The battle for third place continues although Willoughby Red must be favoured at this point. It is theoretically possible for either Harbord or Ararat to overtake them but this seems unlikely.

Best wishes to all,

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are Spring progress results for teams and individual performance. We have just three deferred matches to catch up but there are only two weeks remaining so special efforts are required. Suns A and Willoughby Blue are locked together at the top of the table with almost identical results, yet the teams have not yet played each other at all! Competition for third place is fierce with three teams in contention; however, Harbord and Ararat have to take a bye in the final two weeks.

Good luck to all!

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are progress results for teams and individuals to and including w/c 3/11 (week 11). As we approach the end of the final round, please concentrate on catching up deferred matches and getting score sheets in promptly. There appears to be a tough battle for third place, so good luck to all!

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Attached are the usual teams and individual results up to and including week commencing 27/10 (week 10). Please note there are still four deferred matches for which, to my knowledge, no specific arrangements have been made to play them. We are running out of time!

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

This is the new web site address for MWDTTA.  Our previous host company took down its servers and we did not find out until it was too late.

Our apologies for the delay in relocating the site to calfordgreen.

Many thanks to Marcus Green for using his own server to host the site!

Robert Chambers

Web site developer

To Manly Division 1 Players:

For the first time this season, you can find attached the usual results updated to and including Week 9 (W/C 20/10).  A couple of deferred matches have been caught up and no more matches have been deferred.  Keep up the good work!  While it's still relatively early, Suns A and Willoughby Blue are looking like numbers 1 & 2 for the finals (not necessarily in that order) with a tough battle for third place.

Syd Birchall  9498-8646

Closed Singles Championship 22/8/03

This inaugural event was won by Fung Cheung who defeated Ellman Lee 9, 5, 18. Fung played exceptionally well and did not lose his nerve in the nail-biting third game during which he had numerous match points and Ellman had several game points. Fung beat Grant Lee in one semi 9, -9, 7, 9 while Ellman beat Shin Nakazawa in the other 4, 8, 6. There was a pleasing roll-up of 16 players, most of whom stayed to watch the final. A wide range of abilities were represented and everyone had at least 3 matches as we played four round-robin groups. It was a fun night for all and well worth the effort.

Farewell to Grant Lee

Grant returns to Canada at the end of this week and I know everyone will join me in wishing him and his family well. Grant was here for 18 months and he was a great asset to the club. His calm and pleasant temperament, coupled with superior table tennis skills and know-how, are qualities we would have liked to keep! Grant will be back one day and, until then, au revoir!

MWDTTA Presentation Dinner, Saturday 6 September

For those who haven't already done so, please send your ticket orders to Barry Davies, the association secretary without delay. While everyone is of course very welcome, trophy winners really should see it as a duty to attend and accept their trophies. The association committee goes to an extraordinary amount of trouble to organise the trophies and presentation dinner and the least the winners can do is show up to receive the trophies. It detracts greatly from the evening if people just aren't there to get them. As well, it is always an enjoyable social occasion. While we would love to have wives/partners present, if this isn't possible, winners should come alone, as others have on previous occasions.

Spring Teams Competition

The comp starts this week with Green playing Suns A at Suns on Tuesday, Red playing Hornsby at Willoughby on Friday, and Blue having a bye. The comp continues into December with the Grand Final to be played in the week commencing 8/12. As we now have three teams entered, there will be five occasions when two comp matches will be played at Willoughby on the same night. Best of luck to all!

Syd Birchall   9498-8646

Spring Teams Competition

The competition starts next week and you can find the new draw here. We have converted the old Suns B team into Willoughby Green with Shin as captain. We did this because there are two Willoughby players and Willoughby is much more convenient for Shinji Owada and Shin than Wahroonga. Marcus is happy with this. With three teams, there will be 5 occasions when there will be two comp matches at Willoughby on the same night.

Rob Chambers has kindly agreed to join the Ararat team to strengthen it and keep up the numbers. It will be a much better team and Willoughby Blue still has three players.

For the first week, Green plays Suns A at Suns, Red plays Hornsby at Willoughby and Blue has a bye.

Willoughby Club Closed Singles Championship

As previously advised, this inaugural (and unofficial) event will be played at Willoughby this Friday, 22 August. Any club member who is there by 8:15pm will be entered in the draw. With 4 tables, we can play 4 round robin groups with a maximum of 4 players per group. Any more than that and it will have to be a knockout draw. The four group winners will play knockout semis and final. Four players will be seeded, one in each group, and the balance drawn at random. The usual $4 playing fee will apply. There will be a perpetual cup for the winner but, at least this year, nothing for runner-up (other than the pride of having done so well!). You donít have to enter beforehand but, if anyone knows they will not be there, please send me an e-mail.

MWDTTA Presentation Dinner

Please donít forget to order your tickets for the dinner on Saturday, 6 September at Forestville RSL. This year the dinner will be in the View Room which is a much better venue than last yearís dinner.

Check out the final results of the Autumn comp here!

To Manly Division 1 Players:

Congratulations to Suns A who defeated Willoughby Blue 3-1 in the Grand Final last Friday night.  Don, Stewart and Michael thoroughly deserved their victory as the team saved their best play for the last two matches.  Quality of play was high and many tight games and thrilling rallies kept the spectators enthralled.  Commiserations to Willoughby Blue who were the clear number 1 team throughout the rounds but were beaten at the final hurdle.  Detailed results were:  Kemp def. Lee 4, 9, -9, 3;  McDonald def. Cheung 9, 6, 8;  Lee def. McDonald 11,

-8, 9, 9;  Kemp def. Cheung 7, 5, -9, -7, 9.  Please give some thought to the Spring Teams Competition which will start around the end of August.  Because we will not have the usual time pressure of a December presentation dinner, it will be possible to play final and grand final rounds as we did in the Autumn Comp.

Another reminder about the need to get your entries in for the district championships which start at the end of July.  Please enter now as entries close shortly.  Please seriously consider entering in the handicap event which, for the first time, will be played at Willoughby on Friday 8 August.  If we can get sufficient Division 1 interest, it should be an absorbing contest as, theoretically, all players will have an equal opportunity of winning.

29/6/03   PS. I attach grading lists in case you are unsure of your eligibility to enter the AR events.

In the Final last night, Suns A defeated Willoughby Red 3-1 (doubles not played) to go into the Grand Final against Willoughby Blue on Friday, 27 June at Willoughby. McDonald def. Tong -7,3,7,11; Rylatt def. Kemp 5,8,-6,7; McDonald def. Rylatt 9,9,10; Kemp def. Tong 4,5,8.

Attached are the final teams points table and final individual performances. The top three teams ended up well separated from each other and the fourth placed team. On the other hand, only one game separated the two bottom teams. There were 42 matches played without one forfeit and this is a credit to all the teams. There was only one match where all 5 rubbers were restricted to 3 games and no match where all 5 rubbers went to 5 games. Willoughby Blue's performance was extremely strong as they virtually averaged a 4-1 result in every match. However, they will surely have a fight on their hands in the Grand Final as Suns A has also been playing very strongly over the latter part of the competition. Best of luck to both teams and thanks to all teams for their participation!

Congratulations to Ellman Lee who headed the individual performance table, losing only one match. Special commendation to Derek Kerr and Wilson Chu who played every match and to Kevin Wright and Michel Khachiki who played every match bar one.

Come along to Willoughby on Friday the 27th as it will be a great match. Also, please get your entries in for the District Championship.

Although there are matches still to be played in this final week of Round 2, we now know enough to say that the three finalists will be (1) Willoughby Blue (2) Suns A, and (3) Willoughby Red. Therefore, Suns A will play Willoughby Red in the Final at Suns on Tuesday 17 June and the winner will play Willoughby Blue in the Grand Final at Willoughby on Friday 27 June. Congratulations to these teams and good luck to them for the finals! Well done, to the other teams who always gave 100% and often upset the stronger teams. I will of course issue final team points and individual performances when they become available.

Attached are progress results to the end of last week (w/c 26/5) with one score sheet not yet received (Austral-Armenian v. Hornsby RSL). Two of the three matches this week are to be played tonight. One of those matches involves Harbord who will have a bye next week and it therefore appears impossible for Harbord to make the final three. Hornsby is still in with a chance although it will be tough going for them. Round 2 ends with next week's matches and we will then move to the Final (second place v. third place) followed by the Grand Final (first place v. winner of Final).

Best of luck to all!

Attached are the usual progress results to and including week commencing 19/5 (week11). As shown, there are three score sheets outstanding, so could team captains please forward these to me urgently or, if matches have not yet been played, advise plans to play the matches. Counting this week, there are only three weeks remaining before the Final and Grand Final and, for three teams which have not yet taken the bye, only two matches remain. At this stage, it will be very difficult to dislodge Willoughby Blue from top spot, but there could be a battle for second and third places.

Last week saw the closest match of the comp so far with Hornsby defeating Harbord 3-2, 12 games to 11 and 208 points to 207.

For those who do not know results of the World Championships in France over the past week, Werner Schlager (Austria) is the Men's World Champion, defeating Joo Se Hyuk (Korea) in the final 4-2. Joo Se Hyuk is the first defensive player to reach the final since 1950! Schlager thoroughly deserved his win as he survived match point against Wang Liqin (China) in the quarters to finally triumph 4-3, and defeated the Olympic Gold Medallist, Kong Linghui (China), in the semis, 14-12 in the seventh game. All the details are on the ITTF website .

Attached are results of team and individual performances to and including week 10 (w/c 12/5/03). Last Friday night provided a surprise result with Willoughby Blue (Ellman, Fung) defeating Red (Dennis, Tommy) 5-0. Although all matches were very hard fought, Blue just had an edge throughout the night. It's a good example of how two evenly matched teams can sometimes provide a superficially one-sided result.

Attached are the usual progress results to end of week 9. Although Suns A has gone ahead of  Willoughby Red into second place, Suns has yet to take the bye. Willoughby Blue continue to power away at top of the table.

I attach progress results for teams and individuals to the end of  Round 1 i.e. week commencing 21 April. (There is still one deferred match to be played, Austral-Armenian v. Suns B.) At present, the two Willoughby teams have a clear lead with Blue in first place and Red in second. If this trend continues, a real battle will be fought for third place and a position in the final.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Best of luck to all!

We have finally caught up enough matches to make the results meaningful so I'm attaching the usual progress scores for teams and individual rankings. There are still two old matches to be played and these are shown at foot of the points table. Some of the individual results should be treated cautiously because some people have not played nearly as many matches as others.

Willoughby Blue has shot to a big lead with some fine results, including 5-0 over Hornsby and Harbord and 4-1 over Suns A.  We would all regret that George Opatrny has moved to Queensland but be pleased to welcome two very good players, Derek Kerr and Michael Kemp, back to the competition after an absence of some years.

As always, please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or comments.
